Delhi Metro opens exact change counters at 20 stations

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in order to facilitate and encourage the passengers to bring exact change while purchasing tokens for Metro travel have opened dedicated ‘Exact Change Counters’ at 20 Metro stations.Exact Change Counter at Rajiv Chowk

At these counters, only those passengers who bring exact change for purchasing token for their destination station will be entertained. This will avoid any queuing or waiting time for these passengers as they won’t have to wait for return change after buying the tokens.

The stations where these counters are made operational from today are: New Delhi, Chandni Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Anand Vihar, Shahdara, HUDA City Centre, Jahangirpuri, Uttam Nagar East, Saket, Dilshad Garden Kashmere Gate, Badarpur, AIIMS, Vaishali, Karol Bagh, Seelampur, M G Road, NOIDA City Centre, R K Ashram and Dwarka Mor.

In addition, DMRC has also installed ‘Point of Sale (POS) machines at 73 Metro stations (list attached) including all stations of the Airport Express Line to facilitate the cashless transaction for the passengers who wish to recharge their smart cards by using Credit/Debit cards.

These machines are available at Customer Care Centre of these Metro stations and passengers can easily get their Smart Cards recharged (Top-Up) by using their Credit/Debit cards and eliminating the need for carrying cash to the counter all the time.

On the basis of daily requirement from the stations, DMRC on an average faces a demand of approximately Rupees 7 Lakh Coins per day (of Rs. 1, 2 and 5 denominations). To supply these coins to the stations on daily basis, DMRC tries to ensure that enough change is available at the stations to be given to the passengers who tender higher currency (amount) while purchasing the tokens. However, despite all efforts, only about 4 to 4.5 lakh Rupees coins can be made available to the stations on daily basis thus, creating a big gap between demand and supply.

These Exact Change Counters, therefore, are a step towards encouraging passengers to bring exact change for buying tokens quickly and hassle free. DMRC also appeals to all its passengers to tender exact change at Metro stations in view of less availability/supply of coins with DMRC.

DMRC also advises/appeals the passengers to use Smart Cards for their regular travel in the Metro instead of Tokens. Use of Smart Card gives 10% discount on all travel besides helping to manage problem of change/coins at the stations. Presently, about 70% of our passengers are Smart Card users.
